Problem:
The New York Bay area grapples with environmental challenges as a result of its dense population. The nexus between urban living and ocean pollution is particularly evident in the Mamaroneck and Harrison area. The high population density contributes to increased waste generation
Solution:
From an early age, cultivating an appreciation for natural resources and fostering awareness of the importance of a clean ocean becomes crucial. Educating the youth about sustainable practices, the repercussions of pollution, and the significance of preserving marine ecosystems sets the foundation for responsible environmental stewardship. Group of young volunteers organized regular clean up operations in Mamaroneck Harbor bay and park and Columbus park, starting from summer 2023
Impact:
Each trip resulted from trash sorted into regular and recycling trash bags collected from the Harbor and Mamaroneck Columbus Park (there were a lot of alcohol bottles near river). Recycling trash is stored together with September recycling to make a sculpture in spring to raise ppl's awareness. Approximately 2 hours 45 min per visit: prepare equipment (gloves, grabbers, bags), logistics to and from parks, collect and sort trash.
