Care Packages For Heroes

Problem:
The COVID-19 crisis has infected millions of people and killed hundreds of thousands more. Billions of people worldwide are told to self-quarantine in order to prevent themselves and others from the highly contagious disease. In a world of bad news, a lending hand was desperately needed. Leo specifically wanted to help the veterans, after he had performed at a piano recital years ago and he saw the veterans and got to know them. It made Leo realize just how much they deserve our appreciation and support.
Solution:
Leo’s idea was to make “care packages” and send them out to veterans’ homes all over the state. After some careful research, planning, and experimenting, he was confident about his idea and got started. Leo found fabric online, ordered it, ironed it, measured it, and cut it, while his mom put them together with sewing. To these masks, Leo also found, printed, cut, and hand wrote cards, thanking the veterans for their service to America.
Impact:
When he had made a good amount of these care packages, he found a willing veteran’s home and sent them some. He was very surprised to receive a grateful thank you letter. The letter encouraged him to send to another veterans home, and that home replied with another letter of gratitude, but they also requested some more of these care packages. This made Leo realize that people truly needed and wanted them. Eventually, Leo sent to many different homes all over New York State and sent a total of about 300 handwritten cards and handmade face masks. “I really hope it helped them”, Leo stated later. “But I know for sure it helped my life feel more purposeful and meaningful during this quarantine where I’m mostly stuck inside all day"
