Problem:
As COVID-19 cases rapidly increase in Westchester County, New York, businesses are hit with a second wave of dormancy and unemployment increases. Many low-income families in Eastern Westchester are continuing to struggle to receive an income and some are even having to struggle to receive proper food and nutrition.
Solution:
Ridge Hill Mall, a popular shopping complex, is partnering with a local food bank, Feeding Westchester, to help ease these worries, especially during the holiday season. The mall hosted a Christmas tree decorating contest called Branches of Joy, where local businesses and nonprofits came together in support of our beautiful county. Voting was conducted online and the mall planned to donate $5,000 if the goal of 5,000 votes was met. Many of the participants also donated, in food items and money. In total, the votes highly surpassed that number. The winner alone garnered 7,535 votes!
Impact:
The donations of Ridge Hill Mall and the various other businesses and nonprofits that participated in the event greatly impacted the abilities of Feeding Westchester. With several thousand dollars and several hundred food items, they are sure to feed dozens of families and help support our wonderful community and, not to mention, even safe lives.
